Carey Cameron: Testimonial
ARTSFEST 2021
I created this work after hearing about the fact that there were two stories of the traditional Medusa myth: one that was defined by sexism and portrayed Medusa as evil, and another that was not marred by the direct sexism of the first. As a woman, I could relate to the emotion of being constantly evaluated by sexist stereotypes. Her story touched me. I decided to paint myself as Medusa, with my orange hair. The five patterned snakes each represented parts of myself. The purple one with vines is my love of nature, the spots is my happiness, the red is my passion for life, the gray one is melancholy, and the orange is my joy. They are looking up, looking towards the future.
