ABOUT ARTSFEST 2021
I created this work to represent every modern woman's relationship to Medusa, hence the mirror. I did not want to directly include myself so I utilized the mirror to represent myself as well as every viewer. The piece is very much up for interpretation, as it has various components and no clear ideation of Medusa herself. I rather wanted to focus on her emotions and how she is not that far off from women who have been victim to sexism and harassment. I also wanted to emphasize the 3-dimensionality of women's emotions, as the progression of the piece does not go directly from sad to happy and represents the complexity of a woman's brain. The top of the piece is morose with muted colors and somber photos, but compliments the cartoon of the angel, and represents the emotional drainage and stealing of innocence that Medusa, and other women feel. The piece then descends into bright colors, heavy textures, and pictures of fun and friends, but is also offset by the devil cartoon, "Armageddon" newsclip and poppy drawings, which represent the uncertain and rocky path to healing, which includes moments of anger, regret, vengeance, manic confidence, manic destruction, actual blissful healing, comfort in friends, etc.
